Common Breast Cancer Info That Could Save Your Life
While you can't guarantee the prevention of breast cancer by exercising, eating healthily, and being aware of changes in your body, such actions that are normally attributed to a healthy lifestyle can greatly reduce the risk of breast cancer. Both women and men can get the disease, but women are 100 times more likely to get it than men. Also, it is the fifth leading cause of death by cancer in women worldwide. These breast cancer statistics are certainly sobering, but they help us put the problem into a perspective that translates to a dire need for women to take preventative steps throughout their lives, not just when they become candidates for mammography around age 40.
Self-examinations are key. At minimum, women should be performing self-breast examinations once a month and getting breast health exams from their physicians at least once annually. Monthly self-exams for pre-menopausal women should be done several days after menstruation to get the most accurate results. Menopausal women should perform their self-exams on the same day of each month.
Genetics and environmental factors certainly play a part in the development of the disease, but even if you have no incidence of it in your family, you shouldn't rely on genetic luck alone to keep you in the clear. Living healthily is a major key to breast cancer prevention. We've already mentioned healthy eating, exercise, and self-breast exams, but there are also behaviors that put us at risk that are well within our abilities to control. Alcohol, for instance, should be used in moderation and use of tobacco should be limited, if not cut out altogether. Both of these behaviors have been linked to higher incidence of breast cancer in women, not to mention all the other health problems that can arise. Overweight and obese women are also at greater risk, especially if the weight was gained post-menopause.
There is no known breast cancer medication or "cure" as of yet, but a great deal of scientific energy is being channeled toward that end. Thankfully, there are numerous research foundations, societies and organizations large and small wholeheartedly dedicated to this fight. The battle for each of us as individuals, however, begins at home. Whether we have been diagnosed with the disease or not, we can all play a part in spreading awareness and valuable breast cancer info. Prevention and early detection are the best assurances we have. And sometimes, no matter what we do to reduce our risk, we still end up on the front lines among the 12.7% of women in the United States who will develop the disease at some point during their lives.
Next time you're with a group of friends, in a mall or on a crowded street, remember this: 1 in 8 women born in the U.S. will get the disease. While some of us are more at risk than others, either due to genetics, environmental factors, lifestyle choices or a combination thereof, none of us are immune or invincible. I wanted to talk to you about snoring surgery and why it won't work for you. I know there are people out there that really want to attempt this as a viable solution. I don't want to turn you away from it. A few people out of a hundred sufferers will actually need to go through surgery to fix this problem. But I want to point out that this is only in the most extreme cases. Despite how bad you think your problem is, it probably isn't that bad. Most people assume that they got the worst type possible, but it frankly isn't true. I'm going to show why snoring surgery isn't going to be smart move for you.
The sounds that you hear when you snore is actually tissue in your throat that vibrates. The idea behind the surgery is that if you remove this tissue from the throat than you can't possible produce the snore sounds that you hear. This is a real over simplified way of looking at things. The fact is that this tissue isn't a problem while you're awake, so obviously it isn't that big of deal. The main reason that you snore is that your jaw becomes unsupported and falls down on your throat, which creates pressure.
Instead of doing snoring surgery, all you have to do is keep your jaw off your throat. You can do this with a device known as a jaw supporter. It is the most comfortable way for your jaw to be supported and stop this entire problem.
Diet and Cancer
Over the past decade, the incidence of cancer has risen faster than other chronic diseases in the United States. Cancer strikes one out of every three people. Only heart disease, which affects one out of two 2 people, affects more people..
The relationship between diet and cancer exists: 40% of men and 60% women have a casual relationship between diet and cancer.
In all research, what remains unclear is whether certain foods have protective properties, or if consuming these foods decreases the effect of other foods that have a strong association with carcinogens.
Today, the research does indicate that low intakes of lentils, green vegetables, fresh fruit, and certain vitamins creates an increased risk for many cancers. The cancers I want to highlight are the ones that are the most prominent; breast cancer, ovarian cancer, colorectal cancer, testicular cancer, and Hodgkin's disease.
Before we discuss the specific protective agents found in food, I would like to start with general diet. Fats, carbohydrate, protein and fiber all have a strong influence on developing cancer.
In many of my writings, I have discussed high fiber-low fat importance, especially animal fat, relative to heart disease. It would seem logical the same diet would contribute to cancer. The key ingredient, like heart disease, is the increased consumption of dietary fiber and a decrease in red meat consumption. The increase in red meat consumption and low fiber intake has a strong associate with colorectal cancer. Unsaturated fats, unlike the saturated fats found in red meat, decrease colorectal cancer.
Western diets have a casual relationship with cancer. Most Asians, Africans and Hispanics have lower incidence of cancer until exposed to Western diets. Breast cancer, which is one of the fastest increasing forms of cancer, correlates with changes in hormonal levels. High dietary fat intake increases the hormones in women. Pre-pubescent young women who eat a high saturated fat diet will begin menstruation 1 to 2 years before young women who do not consume high amounts of animal fat and are not overweight.
Body weight, body fat, body height-to-weight ratio, and obesity are strongly associated with increases in almost all cancers. This risk increases more in post-menopausal women.
Apart from reducing red meat consumption to 4 ounces or less a day and bringing fiber up to greater than 30 mg a day, there are important nutrients that can provide protection.
Carotenoids and Retinoids are found in green leafy and yellow vegetables, fruits, and dark wines. Supplements I work with are from Waiora, a health and nutrition company that has a governing body of 10 physicians and a bio-scientist who produce some powerful supplements.

Trace Elements Selenium and Zinc - found in fish, dark leafy vegetables and grains.
