There are lots of different symptoms of insomnia. Each person will be different experiencing certain symptoms but not others. This list in no way describes every symptom of insomnia, only the most often reported by those who suffer from insomnia.

Trouble falling to sleep: Experts agree it should take anything up to 20 minutes to fall asleep. People who take longer than 30 minutes are showing a common symptom of insomnia. It is suggested that if after half hour you cannot sleep, get up. Go do something relaxing such as reading a magazine. Then when you again feel tired, try once again to sleep. You could also try to learn a relaxation technique such as self hypnosis or meditation.

Constant waking: another common symptom of insomnia is been unable to stay asleep. Although you may have no problem in getting to sleep, you constantly wake up throughout the night tossing and turning and generally feeling restless. Another is that you wake up way too early and your mind refuses to go back to sleep.

Feeling Groggy: Feeling like you've slept well yet finding yourself unrefreshed and unrested, walking around like a zombie is a popular insomnia symptom. You will have little concentration and your reaction times will be much slower than usual. You may also find yourself snapping at your loved ones and work colleagues. Getting more exercise and sunshine as been shown to raise alertness, so too as changing ones diet. Although the only way to banish the feeling for good will be to cure your insomnia.

Anxiety: Constantly feeling anxious for no known reason, especially around family and friends could be down to many things. Although many insomniacs say that when going through a period of insomnia they often suffer terrible anxiety. There are pills available for anxiety, but I would suggest leaving this to a last resort. First I would again try learning yourself to relax, try researching into breathing exercises which as been shown to lower levels of anxiety in sufferers.

Many of us are aware that the symptoms of insomnia is being awake, yet the inability to get to sleep or even stay asleep is certainly the most obvious and noteworthy symptom of insomnia. But there may be other symptoms that you may not even recognise as being connected to your sleeping problems.

Insomnia in itself isn't just a condition; it may also be a symptom of another, more serious and underlying condition.

This is where your doctor runs a complete and thorough medical checkup to make sure they can piece the whole insomnia puzzle together and prescribe an effective treatment for your sleeplessness.

The most common cause of insomnia is sleeplessness, but there are other symptoms that may also include:-

•	Anxiety and stress
•	'Brain fog' or having difficulty in concentrating
•	Drowsiness
•	Fatigue
•	Impaired memory
•	Irritability

Fatigue and drowsiness may be symptoms of insomnia, and you may need to admit that your increasing anxiety or lousy mood may be associated to your sleeplessness. So, if you are tired, anxious, and crabby, or you just can't seem to concentrate, but you also can't seem to remember why you can't concentrate, you may need to look to insomnia as the underlying cause.

Chronic insomnia can also cause a variety of less common symptoms, many of which you wouldn't normally associate with insomnia. These less common symptoms may include:-

•	Apathy
•	Headaches
•	Increased blood pressure
•	Low energy
•	Having an overall feeling of sickness or malaise
•	Weight gain

These less common symptoms generally will show up after a person has been suffering from insomnia for an extended period of time, it could be for as long as a month or even more.

Chronic insomnia is one of the sleep disorders, which affects one's quality of life. Statistics shows that one third of Americans are facing the danger of chronic insomnia. The sleeplessness is generally classified into different categories, according to its period of consistent occurrence. Of these, chronic insomnia is the most serious type, which lasts consistently for a prolonged period of time, say one month or more. It is clear that insomnia does not result any lethal problems, however, it affects the normal functioning of a person and results in reduced productivity.

Causes

On the basis of the cause of occurrence, chronic insomnia is classified into primary insomnia and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is caused by personal ill-effects, whereas secondary insomnia is resulted as a side effect of any external disturbances such as medication, environmental reasons, and psychiatric conditions.

The general causes for insomnia include poor sleep hygiene, anxiety, depression, hormonal imbalance, and circadian rhythm disorders. Most often, chronic insomnia is not a disorder of its own but a symptom of more serious physiological and psychological disorders. The people suffering from the diseases such as allergy, asthma, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), rheumatologic complaints, neurodegenerative diseases, endocrine diseases, kidney failures, and restless leg syndrome are more likely to get affected by the disorder. The behavioral disorders such as excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol, and drugs could also lead to insomnia. Due to biological specialties, women and elderly people are more prone to the risk of chronic insomnia.

Effects of insomnia

Chronic insomnia affects the mental stability of a person and weakens the immune system. It shows the symptoms such as dizziness, dilemma, anxiety, impaired concentration, lowering thinking capability, and deteriorates decision making skills. Chronic insomnia will increase chances of accidents while driving and may lead to many serious clinical manifestations.

Symptoms

Chronic insomnia feature troubles in a sound sleep, such as reduced sleep time, frequent wake ups in the middle of the sleep, and day symptoms of irritability and sleepiness. A person has to seek the assistance of a physician, if he experiences any of the conditions such as absence of sleep even in tired conditions, only light sleep in night that results fatigue on awakening, and waking up very early.

Diagnosis

Physician will diagnose the disease, with the help of certain questionnaires such as the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS). Multiple Sleep Latency test is the diagnostic tool to confirm chronic insomnia. An expert physician will focus to find out underlying reason for chronic insomnia.

Treatment

Chronic insomnia is often a curable disease. Early diagnosis and proper medication will help for speedy recovery. Physicians generally suggest hypnotics for the treatment of insomnia. The common prescriptions for chronic insomnia include benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepines, and antihistamines. The behavioral therapies such as stimulus control, progressive muscle relaxation, paradoxical intention, biofeedback, cognitive behavioral therapy, and light therapy are recommended in some cases of chronic insomnia. The natural herbals such as Valerian root, Kava kava, and melatonin are practiced in alternative therapy as remedies for chronic insomnia.

Remember, healthy sleep habits and proper lifestyle including balanced diet and exercise, relieves a normal person from the risk of chronic insomnia.

Insomnia can have varied symptoms, depending on the individual. Different people show different symptoms of insomnia, according to the disease symptoms specialists. The common symptoms of insomnia, represented by disease symptoms experts are explained below:

1. People with insomnia feel very dull and tired after sleep. They do not have the feeling of freshness even after taking tea or breakfast.

2. People having insomnia have a lot of difficulty in falling asleep. The individual keeps on tossing and turning I bed but cannot get to sleep for hour and hours.

3. The person may get to sleep after the struggle of hours but will wake up early in the morning and will not be able to go back to sleep, an unsatisfying and un-restful slumber might come but not proper sleep.

4. The person with insomnia is either suffering from depression and anxiety or is very aged.

5. In some cases person cannot sleep in night and cannot stay awake in daytime. In this case, the sleep patterns are reversed.

6. Insomnia is more common in elderly people, as they cannot sleep deeply and for continuous eight hours. They sleep in fragments of time. Such disturbed sleep patterns in elderly people may have been caused due to health problems such as aching bones and muscles, certain medications, and life style changes.

7. People with insomnia cannot perform the activities of day in good manner. They work poorly due to their disturbed sleep patterns.

8. Such people worry about their sleep and think that their life will be badly affected because others of their age have sufficient sleep.

9. If you wake up refreshed or become refreshed after your tea or breakfast, it means that you have had a sufficient sleep according to your body needs.

10. Many people have less bodily need of sleep therefore; they think that they might be suffering from insomnia.

11. If you have a lot of physical activity during day, like exercising, running or sports and you feel tired and dizzy and still you cannot go to sleep, then you might have insomnia, the insomnia disease symptoms suggest.

People with a lot of physical activity generally can sleep very well. It is because their physical activity produces lactic acid in their muscles, which in turn activates the sleep centers of the brain. Depression, stress and anxiety provoking thoughts prevent the sleep centers to be activated. Some common points about insomnia reported by disease symptoms news reporters are:

1. Insomnia is mostly the result of psychological and emotional malfunctioning.

2. Insomnia is more common in people over 60 years of age.

3. It is more common in women. It is common in people with depression.

4. It is more common in people who use caffeine in excessive amounts.

5. Hormonal changes can also lead to insomnia

6. People who had previously been taking sleeping pills also find it very difficult to fall asleep without pills.

7. People preoccupied with thoughts of business, exams or certain other worldly matters also find it difficult to fall asleep and it such conditions persist for a long time, it can lead to insomnia.

Withdrawal as the word suggests refers to pulling back or retirement of a prevailing status and the after effects pertaining to such changed situations. Insomnia Withdrawals in a simpler way deals with the physical and mental stress observed by a person in the course of an unexpected and sudden hampering or shortage of a substance used by him for a long period. The causes supporting symptoms of withdrawals are numerous.

Insomnia withdrawals can only be rectified by following a very slow process. As such insomnia is a common symptom found among various addictive disorders few to be named as drugs, alcohol etc. Depression is commonly influenced by insomnia. Overcoming insomnia is not a difficult task but rather involves a long duration competing with a strategically planned routine which should be followed on a strict base.

Symptoms of insomnia withdrawals are very mild unlike any other withdrawals. They are usually not life threatening. One can start using sleeping pills as a part of overcoming sleeplessness but as they are not free from assuring no side effects these can be limited in its usages. Withdrawal commonly covers symptoms such as sweating, tremor, vomiting, anxiety, insomnia and joint pains. An insomniac would interface with major other problems such as aggression, diarrhea, dizziness, frequent headaches etc. A healthy body requires a completely healthy sleep.

One can be diagnosed with insomnia under any of the following conditions.
Inability to get sleep Frequently waking up at night Difficulty in going back to sleep Waking up too early

Common side effects of insomnia include being tiered during the day, being irritable, and problems concentrating. The causes can be further overviewed by classifying it into primary and secondary insomnia. Primary insomnia is nothing but factors relating to inability of a person in the attainment of sufficient sleep. Primary insomnia is primary in nature. It does not occur as an outcome of any other problem but it is a problem in itself. Primary insomnia is a common condition which is temporary and last only for one month approximately. The most original reasons for primary insomnia will include long tours, busy work schedules, emotional upset, stress etc. On the contrary secondary insomnia is the outcome of sleeplessness due to severe problems identified as the cause of medical condition. Depression is a frequently observed cause of secondary insomnia. Secondary insomnia should always be treated under the strict evaluation by a physician because secondary insomnia could further develop into any other chronic disorder which may be life threatening at times. Reasons for secondary insomnia would include Sleep Apnea (a kind of sleep disorder), alcohol, high dose of medications etc. Increased use of coffee, anxiety, and stress at work can be counted among the reasons of secondary insomnia.

Insomnia is the inability to get the sleep you need. You could have it and not be aware of it. It could happen for a short period or for several years. It's not about how long you are able to sleep but how well you sleep. If you find that you are feeling tired during the day even though you think you are sleeping well at night you may be experiencing it.

Symptoms might include

-	difficulty in falling asleep even though you are tired
-	waking several times during the night
-	waking once but having a difficult time returning to sleep
-	waking up too early in the morning and not being able to get back to sleep
-	needing medicine or alcohol to get to sleep

During the daytime

-	you feel lethargic and/or irritable
-	you can't keep your mind on what you are doing
-	things that were easy to do now seem difficult
-	you don't react as quickly as you used to
-	you are not as alert as you once were
-	you feel anxious or depressed

There are several things you can watch out for that may help alleviate the problem. These are some of the easy fixes that may preclude the necessity for medical intervention.

-	If you are not getting the proper amount of exercise you may want to start a program. Join a club or just get out and walk. Anything that increases your physical activity will help with sleep. Just moving your body is better than sitting on the couch watching TV. You don't have to exercise until you are exhausted. Nor do you have to spend a lot of money. Simple sit-ups, push-ups, jumping jacks etc. in your home will work fine.

-	If you watch violent or upsetting movies or TV programs, they can affect your frame of mind when you go to bed. It would be better to read an enjoyable book or do anything that you find to be relaxing.

-	Make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet.

-	Watch what you eat or drink prior to going to bed. Alcohol, smoking and caffeine should definitely be avoided.

-	Stress can be a major factor especially if you are worrying about something and cannot get your mind off of it. In this case you can try lying in bed flat on your back, face up and hands at your sides. Relax your mind and begin thinking about the muscles in your feet. Concentrate on relaxing your toes, then feet then ankles. Do this by first making those muscles tense, then slowly relaxing them. Continue by working your way up until you have reached the top of your head. All the while relaxing the muscles as you go from bottom to top. Be especially careful of the facial muscles because tenseness in them can creep back in, especially around the eyes and cheeks. When you are completely relaxed, try to empty your mind of any thoughts. Anything at all. You want it to be completely blank. This is not easy, but eventually, if you keep at it, you will find it is possible. At first random thoughts or pictures will keep popping back into your conscious, but just try to remove them by thinking about "nothing". Try to picture your mind as completely blank.

Sleep deprivation symptoms can be numerous, and indeed, may not only be indicative of insomnia, and may also overlap symptoms with those of another illness... though clearly, if you haven't been getting much sleep, and you show signs of the symptoms of sleep deprivation, you might wish to take some steps toward remedying the problem. Some of the symptoms of sleep deprivation can include;

o A constant, vague tiredness
o Edginess, irritability, or uncharacteristic quickness to anger
o An inability to tolerate stress, perhaps even relatively minor stresses
o Difficulties with memory and concentration
o Learning, behavioral or social problems
o Frequent infections
o Taking much longer to get over a cold than is normal
o Injuries once acquired seem to take forever to heal
o Blurred vision
o A vague, overall discomfort
o Changes in appetite
o An intolerance for activities

If you have any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from sleep deprivation. The best thing to do is to relax, although that may be the most difficult thing to accomplish. We find it difficult to quiet the constant chatter of thoughts in our minds... the worries of the day, the stresses of work, the watching of the clock as we mentally worry over how few hours of possible sleep we have left. This is where isochronic tones and pulses come in. Not merely relaxing music, this audio therapy can eliminate the symptoms of sleep deprivation by using certain frequencies of pulses in the background of soothing tones which induce certain brainwave activities which are most conducive to natural sleep.

Insomnia refers to the inability to sleep or getting poor quality sleep. Many people seek medical help when they find the insomnia symptoms disturbing. Without complete and high quality rest, you suffer from restlessness the following day. Because sleep is an essential part of life, you need to get a relaxing retreat every night in order to boost your energy in the morning. If you feel the problem is something light and does not need your immediate attention, think again. Your life is at risk with this disorder.

Poor Mental Concentration

Inability to sleep can lead to poor mental concentration, the most common of the insomnia symptoms. Because your day-to-day activities depend on how well you concentrate, you need to get enough rest at night. Otherwise, getting in focus and performing well at work will be very difficult. With your inefficient performance, your job suffers.

Motor-Vehicle Accidents

Driving and drinking are a no-no on the roads. But many people tend to forget that lack of sleep and driving are as bad as the former. Many of the vehicular accidents occur from drivers without enough rest. Because the roads are risky, you cannot compromise your life due to sleepless nights. When you experience symptoms of sleeplessness, you do not only put your life at risk but others you meet on the road as well.

Irritability in Social Interaction

One of problems that you hate to encounter is irritability. Individuals deprived of a relaxing retreat are irritable throughout the day. They have a short temper and find mistakes in almost everything. If you keep the insomnia symptoms in you, eventually, you will lose your friends and you will annoy everyone around.

Looking for some good insomnia information? Want to get those insomnia problems under control once and for all? Well then, you're in the right place, as you're about to learn some important facts about insomnia; including highly effective natural insomnia remedies.

Insomnia Causes

Insomnia can be caused by numerous things, most of which you wouldn't even think twice about. Some of the most common causes of insomnia are: uncomfortable environment (noise, room temperature, bed firmness, quantity of fresh air), work shift changes, stress, underlying illnesses, withdrawal from drugs and/or medications, depression, and a whole lot more. In today's world, it seems almost anything can lead to insomnia.

Insomnia Symptoms

There isn't a great deal of reliable insomnia information when it comes to identifying the symptoms of insomnia. Why not? Because insomnia symptoms are so incredibly similar to that of other disorders that it's quite difficult to accurately diagnose. However, here are a few of the more common insomnia symptoms that you'll likely notice:

- Exhaustion: A sincere feeling of not wanting to do anything. Everything seems to drain you of energy; be it getting up to go to the bathroom or just finishing the days work.

- Poor Memory: You have a brief recollection of events, but nothing remotely specific can come to mind.

- Poor Motor Skills: Speech, reaction time, critical thinking, you name it, it is all severely impaired. You can complete basic tasks and you might even be able to have a short conversation or two, but anything else is just too much for you to handle.

- Irritability: Everything annoys you. No matter who you're dealing with or what you're doing, you are annoyed.

Natural Remedies to Improve Insomnia Problems

When it comes to insomnia information, there is nothing more helpful than natural remedies for insomnia. Because of that fact, a few insomnia natural remedies have been listed below.

- Sleep in complete darkness. A dark room enables our bodies to produce a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin helps us to sleep more peacefully with fewer interruptions. Afraid of the dark? Get a small night light.

- Drink herbal tea before bed. A cub of herbal tea, which has strong relaxing and calming properties, right before bed will help out a great deal with your sleeping habits. Great herbal teas with sedative properties include passion flower, chamomile, valerian, and many others.

- Take a warm bath. A warm bath combined with natural oils (chamomile, lavender, marjoram, neroli, rose, jasmine, etc.) can be both soothing and calming, allowing you to achieve maximum relaxation much more quickly. The more relaxed you are, the easier it will be to go to sleep.

- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and tobacco: Caffeine is a stimulant which will simply keep you awake. Alcohol and tobacco, on the other hand, will actually upset your natural sleeping rhythm. Lessen your consumption of these during the day for better sleep at night. If it doesn't help, try eliminating them completely.

- Listen to sleep soundtracks. Specially composed soundtracks can help lull you to sleep in a matter of minutes. These soundtracks are relatively inexpensive and can be easily purchased online.

The above insomnia information should help you to understand your insomnia problems a bit more clearly. And, with help from the natural insomnia remedies above, you might just be able to sleep more peacefully at night.
